YЄS-Running™ General Information YЄS-Running™ has one purpose, and that is to GET kids running™ in the "SPORT of RUNNING". (Games - Exercise - Teamwork)
YЄS-Running™ is based on the endurance sport of Cross Country. There are two YES-Running™ activities. One is organized for kids At School, and the other is organized for kids After School.
YЄS-Running™ At School TEAMS Each student in the two selected grades (4th, 5th or 6th) is part of their YES-Running™ TEAM (at school). Each homeroom can have two YES-Running™ teams at school - a boys team and a girls team.
RACE DAY Each Team will run a race on the playground during P.E. on their school's scheduled YES-Running™ Race Day. The course that the Teams will race on is marked like a short Cross Country course - usually 400 meters long. Each Team gets to race approximately once each month at school.
Each Team has two goals on Race Day. The first goal is for each Team to set a new Team Record (TR) each month. And, the second goal is for as many team members to set a new Personal Record (PR) on Race Day as possible. The Team's "TR" is based on the average of the finishing times of all team members. So, the faster each team member runs on Race Day, the better the Team's chance becomes of setting a new Team Record (TR).
Team members are encouraged to wait at the finish line after they finish running to cheer for each team member that finishes, until all team members have crossed the finish line. Each member is very important to the team, regardless of their order of finish, whether it's first - last -or- somewhere in between. This is a TRADITION for YES-Running™ Teams and Clubs.
YЄS-Running™ After School CLUBS If students would like to be a member of a local Running Club - - - and if parents would like for their kids to have FUN, QUALITY Exercise on a regular basis (that's AFFORDABLE), they can also run after school and on weekends as part of a YES-Running CLUB. Each YES-Running™ Club is made up Teams. Each Team within the Club must have at least 4 members the same gender and in the same YES-Running™ Age Group. YES-Running age groups for clubs are based on their grade, just like YES-Running at school. YES-Running™ Clubs may include all age groups - from 1st grade through the 8th grade. Club members are not required to participate in a YES-Running - at school program. YES-Running™ Clubs participate in local races sanctioned by YєS-Athletics™.
There's no limit on the number of members each Club can have on each team within their Club. And, Club members can attend any school. However, each YES-Running Club may only have one boys team and one girls team within each age group. Clubs can consist of only one team, or a Club can have as many as 16 teams. It's up to the Club.
RACE DAY On Race Day, Teams from YES-Running™ Clubs race head-to-head against Teams from other Clubs. Finishers in the top 50% score 2 points for their team, PLUS - the team gets 1 point for each additional finisher. The "top 50% points" and the "additional points" are added together for the team's total points. If it's a tie, the tiebreaker goes to the team whose last place finisher placed the highest. The top finishers in each race will receive an Award Certificate.
All races on Race Day are on non-paved surfaces such as city parks or other similar property. Races are scheduled during the season on a weekly basis. Most races are on Saturday morning or early afternoon. Clubs may participate in as many of the races as desired during the season. The length of each season and the number of seasons offered in an area is determined by the level of interest and the number of YES-Running™ clubs in that area. It's recommended to have four seasons each year to promote and encourage year-round running and exercise.
There will be a state "Finals" race at the end of each season. The scoring for the "Finals" is based on top 50% points only. Each Team may enter up to 10 runners in the "Finals". Each Team must pre-register for the "Finals".
YES-Running seasons: Fall - - - Sept - Oct - Nov Winter - - - Dec - Jan - Feb Spring - - - Mar - Apr - May Summer - - - June - July
The race distances for YES-Running™ Clubs is as follows: 1st & 2nd Grade - 800m* 3rd & 4th Grade - 800m 5th & 6th Grade - 1600m 7th & 8th Grade - 2400m *(pre-developmental race - no team scoring - not offered until 2011)
The competition fee for regular season races is $5 per runner. The competition fee for the state "Finals" is $10 per runner. (The Competition Fee for each team is paid on race day, at "check-in".)
Each member of YES-Running™ Clubs must be a member of YЄS-Athletics™. YES-Running clubs, races and courses are sanctioned through YЄS-Athletics™. Each club must be a member. (Club Membership - $10 per year) For additional information on YES-Athletics please visit: www.yesathletics.org
We encourage you to organize your YES-Running™ club as an "Exercise Club". See "Єxercise-Clubs" for more details.
